Working in Newport

Across the Bridge into South Wales

Newport is a short run from Bristol over the Prince of Wales Bridge, and the Severn crossings have been toll-free since December 2018, so jobs in Newport and the towns around it are easy to reach.

A lot of the work here is commercial and industrial: reinforced concrete floors and walls in warehouses, factories, offices and public buildings, as well as houses and extensions across the city. Most of it means coring and cutting through concrete with steel in it, accurately and without leaving water and slurry across the site.

01

Reinforced Concrete

Service holes through slabs and walls with steel reinforcement in them. Diamond bits cut through concrete and rebar together, so the hole is the size and position you asked for, without hammering the concrete around it.

02

Building Rules in Wales

Building regulations in Wales are set by the Welsh Government, not Westminster, and differ from England in places. For new openings or structural work, check what approval you need with building control before the job is booked.

03

Working on Site

On commercial and industrial jobs, we work to the site's permits and inductions, collect the water and slurry as we go, and keep the work area tidy for the trades following on.

How we core a floor slab

Coring Through a Concrete Floor

Holes through floors are a big part of commercial work: risers for pipes and ducts, drainage, and cable routes between floors. In most Newport commercial buildings, that means a reinforced concrete slab.

The drill is fixed to the slab on a rig so the core stays square, and a water collection ring sits around the bit so the cooling water and slurry are taken away by a wet vacuum instead of running across the floor or through the hole onto the floor below.

When the bit is through, the core comes out in one piece, steel included, leaving a clean, round hole ready for the sleeve, pipe or duct.

Methods we use in Newport

Rig-Mounted Coring

For floor and wall penetrations in commercial buildings, where holes need to line up between floors or with a fixed duct or pipe route.

Large-Bore Coring

Big cores for ducts, ventilation and service runs, cut out in one piece so there's no breaking out and very little making good.

Wall Sawing

Track-mounted cuts for new doors, windows and openings in concrete walls, with straight, square edges.

Floor Sawing

Straight cuts through slabs for trenches, drains, channels and slab removal on industrial and commercial sites.

FAQs

Diamond Drilling in Newport: Your Questions

Do you work in Newport and South Wales?

Yes. We're based in Bristol and cross the Prince of Wales Bridge for jobs in Newport, Caerleon, Cwmbran, Chepstow and the towns around them. The bridge has been toll-free since December 2018.

Are building regulations different in Wales?

Yes, in places. Building regulations in Wales are set by the Welsh Government and can differ from England. If your job involves a new opening or other structural work, check what approval you need with building control before booking.

Can you core through reinforced concrete floors?

Yes. Floor cores are drilled on a rig with a water collection ring, so the hole is square and the slurry is taken away by a wet vacuum. The diamond bit cuts the concrete and the steel together.

Do you work for main contractors and M&E firms?

Yes. As well as homeowners, we work for main contractors, M&E contractors, electricians and plumbers, and work to the site's inductions, permits and method statements.

How large can the cores be?

From small cable holes up to large-diameter cores for ducts and ventilation. Send the sizes and the material, and Liam will confirm how each one will be drilled.

How do I get a price for a job in Newport?

Send photos, the sizes and any drawings. Liam replies with a fixed price and a date, usually within 24 hours.
