Working in Weston

From Seafront Terraces to New Estates

Weston-super-Mare is two towns in one for drilling work. Near the seafront and in the older streets there are Victorian terraces and villas, many with rendered fronts and solid walls. Around the edges are the newer estates, such as Haywood Village and Locking Parklands, built with block cavity walls.

Each needs a slightly different approach. Older walls are thick and uneven, and a hole through render has to come out clean on the face. Newer cavity walls core quickly, but the hole has to cross the cavity and insulation neatly so the pipe or duct can be sealed properly.

01

Rendered Walls

Through render, a diamond core cuts a clean round edge instead of cracking the render around the hole the way a hammer drill can. That leaves a neat hole to sleeve and seal, and far less patching on the outside of the house.

02

Exposed to the Weather

Walls facing the sea take driving rain and wind. Vent and extract holes are cored with a slight fall to the outside, so any water that gets into the duct runs away from the wall rather than back into the house.

03

New-Build Estates

Holes for extractor fans, tumble dryer vents, soil pipes and outside taps in newer homes, plus extra cores when a kitchen or bathroom is moved or extended after the house is finished.

How we core a cavity wall

Getting the Hole Right Through a Cavity

Most newer homes in Weston, and many extensions to older ones, have a cavity wall: an outer leaf of block or brick (often rendered), a cavity with insulation, and an inner block leaf finished with plaster.

We core the hole in one pass through both leaves, with a slight fall to the outside for vents and extracts. The core comes out whole, so there's no rubble dropped into the cavity, and the hole is clean for the fitter to sleeve the duct through and seal both ends.

If you're not sure what your wall is made of, a photo of the outside and the wall thickness at a window or door opening is usually enough for Liam to tell.

Methods we use in Weston

Handheld Coring

For vent, flue and pipe holes in houses, where the drill needs to go up a ladder or into a tight kitchen or utility room.

Rig-Mounted Coring

For bigger holes and straight runs, like soil pipes through floors and ducts through thicker walls in commercial premises.

Wall Chasing

Twin-blade chases for rewires and new heating in older terraces, cut to depth with dust extraction so the house isn't covered in dust.

Floor Sawing

Straight cuts through concrete floors, yards and driveways for new drains, channels and service trenches.

Saw Cutting in Weston

Door and window openings, knock-throughs between rooms, and floor and driveway cuts for drains and channels. A new opening in a load-bearing wall needs an engineer's design and building control approval first.

Chasing in Weston

Cable and pipe chases for rewires, new heating and kitchen and bathroom refits, cut straight and to a set depth with dust extraction.

FAQs

Diamond Drilling in Weston-super-Mare: Your Questions

Do you cover Weston-super-Mare and the rest of North Somerset?

Yes. Weston is about 20 miles from our base in Bristol down the M5, and we cover the town and the villages around it, from Uphill and Worle out to Banwell, Congresbury and Cheddar.

Can you drill an extractor fan hole through a rendered wall?

Yes. A diamond core cuts a clean round edge through the render rather than cracking it, so there's very little patching to do outside. Vent holes are cored with a slight fall to the outside so water runs away from the wall.

Do you work on new-build homes at Haywood Village and Locking Parklands?

Yes. Newer homes are usually block cavity walls, which core quickly and cleanly. We drill holes for extractor fans, tumble dryer vents, soil pipes and outside taps, and extra cores when a kitchen or bathroom is changed.

What about holes in houses that face the sea?

Exposed walls take a lot of driving rain, so any hole through them needs to be sleeved and sealed once the pipe or duct is in. We core with a slight fall to the outside and leave a clean hole that's easy to seal properly.

Can you cut a new opening in a Victorian house in Weston?

Yes, once a structural engineer has designed the support. Cutting an opening in a load-bearing wall also needs building control approval. With that in place, the opening is cut cleanly with a wall saw so the wall around it isn't damaged.

How do I get a price for a job in Weston?

Send a few photos and rough sizes. Liam replies with a fixed price and a date, usually within 24 hours, and most Weston jobs don't need a site visit first.
